{"id":4640,"date":"2025-10-11T10:12:49","date_gmt":"2025-10-11T10:12:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/parrycharity.co.uk\/?p=4640"},"modified":"2026-07-03T21:11:57","modified_gmt":"2026-07-03T21:11:57","slug":"building-skills-and-community-through-cookery-classes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/parrycharity.co.uk\/index.php\/2025\/10\/11\/building-skills-and-community-through-cookery-classes\/","title":{"rendered":"Building Skills and Community Through Cookery Classes"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#0693e3\" class=\"has-inline-color\">T<\/mark>hrough our Homeless Hub programme, we made a grant to support <a href=\"https:\/\/www.caringinbristol.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Caring in Bristol <\/a>with their Cookery Class project.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Amanda Grimstead from the Charity has shared with us how the project has had an impact on people struggling with putting food on the table.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-image alignright uagb-block-6fe09a9d wp-block-uagb-image--layout-default wp-block-uagb-image--effect-static wp-block-uagb-image--align-right\"><figure class=\"wp-block-uagb-image__figure\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/parrycharity.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/prep.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"uag-image-4644\" width=\"190\" height=\"211\" title=\"prep\" loading=\"lazy\" role=\"img\" \/><figcaption class=\"uagb-image-caption\"><strong><em><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-ast-global-color-4-color\">ready to cook?<\/mark><\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;<strong><em>Caring in Bristol has delivered a series of cookery classes over the last 6 months for members of our <strong>Bristol Goods Food Clubs<\/strong> which supports some of the most marginalised areas of our city.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Launched in March 2025, the classes are run by one of our dedicated Food Club Coordinators alongside volunteers \u2013 including one who first joined as a participant in 2024.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-image alignleft uagb-block-af6c9103 wp-block-uagb-image--layout-default wp-block-uagb-image--effect-static wp-block-uagb-image--align-left\"><figure class=\"wp-block-uagb-image__figure\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/parrycharity.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/lasagna.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"uag-image-4642\" width=\"264\" height=\"198\" title=\"lasagna\" loading=\"lazy\" role=\"img\" \/><figcaption class=\"uagb-image-caption\"><strong><em><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-ast-global-color-4-color\">lots of lasagna<\/mark><\/em><\/strong><br><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Sessions have taken place in partnership with other local food-focused charities, such as the Mazi Project who provided the kitchen space for our first two classes and FareShare \u2013 South West<\/em><\/strong><em><strong>,<\/strong><\/em><strong><em> who provided the surplus food that we could then put to good use.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>In April we ran 2 different sessions where participants cooked hearty, affordable meals including a vegetable curry and 20 family-sized lasagnes, later distributed at one of our weekly Food Clubs.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Then, over the summer, we hosted two family-friendly workshops at Hartcliffe Methodist Church, where parents and children could work side by side to make frying pan pizzas and fresh sauces.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>One participant reflected,<\/em> <em><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-ast-global-color-8-color\">\u201cIt was really good. Great getting to know new people and learning different things.\u201d<\/mark><\/em> <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Another added,<\/em> <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-ast-global-color-8-color\"><em>\u201cThe food was all made from scratch with ingredients I can find at food club or at home.<\/em><\/mark><\/strong><em><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-ast-global-color-8-color\">&#8220;<\/mark><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:26px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-image alignright uagb-block-4148993c wp-block-uagb-image--layout-default wp-block-uagb-image--effect-static wp-block-uagb-image--align-right\"><figure class=\"wp-block-uagb-image__figure\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/parrycharity.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/meal.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"uag-image-4643\" width=\"207\" height=\"201\" title=\"meal\" loading=\"lazy\" role=\"img\" \/><figcaption class=\"uagb-image-caption\"><strong><em><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-ast-global-color-4-color\">enjoying a meal<\/mark><\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Each class follows a simple but powerful format: participants learn to cook a healthy, budget-friendly meal, prepare extra portions to take home, and end the session by sharing food together.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Volunteers see the wider impact too. As one explained,<\/em> <em><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-ast-global-color-8-color\">\u201cThe cooking classes give people vital skills and a social connection; these elements improve the quality of people\u2019s lives.\u201d<\/mark><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>These classes are helping people in Bristol to cook well, eat well, and feel less isolated.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>We\u2019re excited to build on this success and expand our cookery programme in the year ahead.<\/em><\/strong>&#8220;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>It is encouraging that these classes have been so useful, we are already talking  with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.caringinbristol.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Caring in Bristol<\/a> about the next project we can support<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Through our Homeless Hub programme, we made a grant to support Caring in Bristol with their Cookery Class project.
